Dolby works hand in hand with all
industry stakeholders.

Enabling IP workflows for a
transformative audio experience

Dolby is committed to enabling format-agnostic NGA production for AC-4 delivery. Next Generation Audio makes TV services more immersive, more accessible, and more personal. It’s increasingly considered as a key part of next generation DVB and HbbTV services. But how will this content be created, and how will it be carried through complex broadcast infrastructure in a manageable way?

Dolby is working on how tomorrow’s all-IP workflows could be harnessed to enable next generation audio to be handled efficiently in broadcast workflows. We have made proof of concept demonstrations featuring an All-IP, workflow end-to-end from content creation to final delivery, leveraging work from several cross-industry initiatives. We are exploring how next generation audio plus associated metadata will be created in the IP workflows of the future, making use of emerging industry standards including SMPTE ST2110, SMPTE RDD49 (PMD), and ITU BS.2125 (Serial ADM).

Dolby is actively contributing to the EBU renderer project (EAR) as well as to defining standardised ADM profiles and metadata, prototyping, and to evaluations of interoperability.

Dolby is also creating and making available tools and open source code. The first stage of this new initiative is an audio metadata authoring tool which enable the authoring of open standard formats such as PMD and serial ADM that have been made available. Full service support

We believe it is important to make solutions openly available to the industry in specifications and standards issued by organizations such as the Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC), Digital Video Broadcasting Project (DVB), European Broadcasting Union (EBU), International Telecommunication Union (ITU), Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE), and European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI).

We have helped lead the industry in standardizing technology and processes for content creation and interchange. For example, Dolby and the BBC co-chaired the ITU group that led development of the key audio definition model. This international recommendation supports descriptions for channels, objects, HOA (Higher Order Ambisonics), binaural, and bitrate-compressed audio elements. It is an important milestone in enabling the open interchange of next-generation immersive and personalized content.

In addition, we are working with NHK and others on next-generation loudness recommendations through the ITU. This is a continuation of Dolby’s decades-long commitment to ensuring that the broadcast industry has a reliable system for consistently managing loudness.
